When you live to 96, you outlive many of your friends. For example, Mom stopped going to her class reunions because there was no one left.
Mom and Daisy were close friends for decades…They met on the phone while working and couldn’t stand each other at first. And yet somehow it turned into a long lasting friendship. The two of them would ‘drive each other nuts’ but they were always together until Daisy died.
Mom was also very close to her cousin Rose. When they were kids, Rose would often sleep over at Mom’s house. Mom said Rose was like her sister. They would have so much fun traveling together, especially the annual ‘Vegas’ trips. Mom was so sad when Rose passed.
Mom also outlived her three husbands and all of her boyfriends.
Only Auntie Bea and her niece Linda are still around.
Bea is now over 100 years old and has been in hospice care since suffering a stroke almost 4 years ago. Mom loved Bea to the end and would visit her, take care of her and just keep her company at least 2-3 times a week.
Linda was Mom’s hangout buddy. They did so many things together for over 50 years. Linda is now in her in her 80s and caring for her 2 daughters. Like me, she misses Mom very much.
Mom knew a lot of people and had so many dear friends. I can’t imagine how hard it was for Mom living as long as she did and losing most of her dear friends. And yet she was always so positive.
